Reverse Sneezing and YOUR Pet's Health

by Tracey Hallman, Guest Author
Owner of The Famous Black Dog Bakery

Virginia was recently at my home with her dog, Cheyenne. Cheyenne is a cocker spaniel; she has somewhat of a short nose but not as short as some breeds.

Cheyenne and Lil' Bit Cowgirl (Famous Black Dog Bakery Quality Control) were playing and horsing around. Cheyenne started choking and sputtering. Virginia had seen her dog do this in the past and didn't know what Cheyenne was doing. It was quite scarey for Virginia not knowing what was happening. Cheyenne was Reverse Sneezing. It can be very frightening if an owner doesn't know what this is.

Reverse Sneezing typically occurs in short nose breeds like Pekes, Pugs, Shih Zu, Boxers, etc. It sometimes occurs with cats such as Persians and other short nose breeds.

Reverse Sneezing can only be described as a choking, coughing, stuck-in-the-throat noise. It is caused when the pet breaths in air and instead of being forced out the nose, it causes the tongue to get pushed up against the soft palette of the mouth. This develops a vacuum of sorts.

Reverse Sneezing can be relieved by the owner blowing on the pet's nose or pulling gently on the pet's tongue. Most of the time it relieves itself.

If you have any questions as to a whether a pet is really choking or your pet's color changes during an episode, don't hesitate to call the vet. There is a Heimlich Maneuver for the pet but that is another article. You don't want to see blue or white gums. The pet's gums should stay pink.

You may consult Merck Veterinary Manual online for additional information and technical names, etc. Over time you will recognize a Reverse Sneeze and can help your pet if the situation does not resolve itself.

Simple Ways to Relieve Stress

by Bryan Appleton, Guest Author

Many people find themselves feeling over-stressed. I know I do sometimes. When you are trying to juggle a career and spend quality time with your kids and still make time to cleanand cook around the house, it's no wonder that we get stressed out form time to time. Add in financial worries or health issues and you can really get to a point where you feel overwhelmed.

Here are a few tips that can really help:

  1. Make sure that every single day you allow yourself at least 20 minutes of quiet relaxation time. Whether you just sit down to catch your breath or kick your feet up and relax watch a favorite comedy on T.V., do not neglect this down time. We all need it and we need it on a daily basis.

  2. Exercise. No only do you release endorphines which make you feel good when you are stressed you are helping to make your body healthier and stronger. Severe stress can have physical effects on you as well. And those endorphines just give you a nice little natural high. So go ahead and give yourself a half an hour, three times per week.

  3. Hobbies. Whether it is woodworking or crafts or writing, everyone feels a little better and a little more calm when they allow themselves to get lost in an activity that they love. We all need productive escapes once in a while and our hobbies really provide a perfect way of doing this.

  4. Get together with friends and family. Love and laughter continue to be the best medicine for stress. Make sure you give yourself enough time to be around the people who love and support you. And if they make you laugh a lot, then all the better.

  5. Laugh. I've already briefly mentioned it twice, but laughter can really just flat out make us feel good. The more we laugh, the better we feel. And many medical studies suggest that laughter can really help us with our health problems as well. Take the time to laugh everyday.

These are just five tips that can really help you out when you feel stressed. Of course, there are many different ways to do this. Overall, just make sure you find which ones seem to work best for you. Stress can be difficult, but it doesn't have to always be overwhelming.

Attacking The Attitude

by Emrika Padu The Complete Guide to Your Emotions & Your Health
(Excerpts from the above book)

Whatever you find works for you, the very act of doing it now instead of putting it off will tend to carry over into the rest of your life. "Every time you tolerate a frustrating circumstance, every time you act instead of hesitate, every time you deal with one of the things that's causing you to procrastinate, you're mounting a concerted attack on the attitude ... and that's the problems, says Dr. Knaus.

But in your personal war against putting things off, don't expect instant results, he warns. Procrastination isn't an isolated habit but part of a whole "psychological mosaic" of behavior, and these things don't change quickly. By its very nature, he adds, procrastination is resistant to change because procrastinators tend to put off the very things they know can help them. So "play for small percentage gains," reward yourself for your progress, and think about those long-awaited, long-term goals your small gains are bringing closer.

Procrastinators who have originally gotten around to working on their problem tend to go through three distinct changes of attitude, Drs. Yuen and Burka have observed. Students in their seminars start out full of optimism, expecting that their procrastination will be put to death quickly, painlessly, and forever. After a few sessions, when they discover lifelong habits don't change quite so easily, they despair of ever changing at all. But by the time the workshop ends, most have gained some insight into the psychological roots of their problem--such as their perfectionist tendencies--and have more realistic expectations about how long it will take to change their habits.

"Ironically," says Dr. Yuen, "as the students demand less perfection of themselves, they find they can do more."

Tony and Robbie Fanning, in their delightful little book about personal time management called Get It All Done and Still Be Human (Ballantine Books), point out something else that should be remembered. Some "time experts," the Fannings observe, tell people to start the day by making a list of all the things they want to accomplish. "If this approach really works for you and you feel good about your use of time without feeling harried and frazzled, then by all means use it," they write. "But this kind of nonstop scheduling is what drove most of us nuts in the first place." The real aim in time management is to feel good, not necessarily to do more.
